The Irish in the West Indies, 1624-1850 - Paperback
by David Dobson (Author)
This book attempts to identify many of the Irish and their descendants in the West Indies in the early modern period. The West Indies contained a white population largely of Irish origin. England forcibly transported thousands of Irish men and women to settle in Barbados and the West Indies. Initially most of them worked as laborers on the plantations, but by the 18th century some of their descendants were merchants, planters, and soldiers. The English, from their base in Barbados, migrated to the Leeward and Windward Islands. When England captured Jamaica in 1653, England increasingly sent felons and prisoners of war to Jamaica.
