Key Text
“Perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment.”
1 John 4:18, KJV
The Word for Today
John is speaking especially about fear of judgment. Those who abide in God’s love can face the future with confidence because Christ has provided forgiveness and reconciliation.
This verse should not be used to shame someone experiencing anxiety or a trauma response. Fear can involve the body and nervous system as well as belief. Prayer, patient support, counseling, and medical care may all be appropriate.
God’s mature love moves us away from torment and toward trust.
Picture the Word
Imagine a barefoot woman representing the church, clothed in a beautiful modest dress and standing on holy ground. Gentle light surrounds her as heavy shadows recede, not because she forced them away, but because she has come to rest within a greater love.
Deeper in the Word
First John connects confidence in judgment with abiding in God. Mature love does not deny accountability; it trusts the saving work and faithful character of Christ.
The fear John describes carries torment and punishment. The gospel replaces servile terror with the Spirit of adoption, through whom believers cry, “Abba, Father.”
Because God loved us first, His love also changes how we treat others. Assurance that never produces love has misunderstood its source.
The Word and the Spirit of Prophecy
In Steps to Christ, chapter 1, “God’s Love for Man,” Ellen G. White directs attention to the Father’s character revealed in Jesus. Read with 1 John 4, fear loosens its grip as distorted pictures of God are replaced by the self-giving love shown at the cross.

The Father’s love is revealed in Christ, salvation provides reconciliation and assurance, and judgment can be faced with reverent confidence rather than tormenting terror.
Live the Word
- Name the fear without shaming yourself for feeling it.
- Place it beside one specific truth about God’s love.
- Ask whether practical support or professional care is needed.
- Receive help as a gift rather than a failure of faith.
- Extend patient love to someone else who is afraid.
Reflect on the Word
Which fear needs to be placed beside the love God revealed through Jesus?
Pray the Word
Father, let Your love replace terror with trust. Correct every distorted picture I carry of You. Give me assurance in Christ, patience with my healing, and wisdom to receive the support and truth I need. Amen.
