Day 26 | January 26: The Light Is Greater Than the Darkness

Key Text

“And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

John 1:5, KJV

The Word for Today

Scripture is honest about darkness. Sin, suffering, deception, oppression, and death are real. The Bible never asks us to rename evil as good or pretend that pain is an illusion.

Yet darkness is never presented as equal to God. John begins his Gospel before creation, identifying Jesus as the eternal Word through whom all things were made. The light entering the darkness is not fragile optimism; it is the life of the Creator Himself.

Depending on translation, John 1:5 carries the idea that darkness did not understand, receive, or overcome the light. Each sense is true within John’s Gospel. Darkness resists Christ, fails to comprehend Him, and cannot extinguish Him.

Do not measure the strength of the Light by how dark today feels. Feelings report our present experience, not Christ’s final authority. Darkness is real, but it is temporary. Jesus is eternal.

Picture the Word

Imagine deep storm clouds covering the horizon until one brilliant shaft of sunlight breaks through. The light does not need to argue with the darkness. Its presence reveals the landscape and proves the clouds are neither infinite nor permanent.

Christ does more than brighten a difficult mood. He exposes lies, reveals the Father, forgives sin, defeats death, and guides His people into truth. Even a small act of obedience can bear witness that darkness no longer owns the whole sky.

Deeper in the Word

John calls Jesus the true Light who gives light to every person. Tragically, the world He made did not recognize Him, and many of His own did not receive Him. The passage therefore joins hope with a decision: the Light shines, and we are invited to receive Him.

At the cross, darkness appeared to triumph. The Son of God was rejected and killed. Yet the resurrection revealed that evil had overreached. Christ bore sin, exposed the enemy’s character, and rose beyond the reach of death.

Believers are transferred from the power of darkness into Christ’s kingdom. That transfer does not remove every struggle immediately. It establishes a new allegiance and a new future. We learn to walk as children of light while awaiting the day when night will be no more.

The Word and the Spirit of Prophecy

In The Desire of Ages, chapter 79, “It Is Finished,” Ellen G. White presents the cross as decisive within the great controversy. Christ’s self-giving love revealed God’s character, exposed Satan’s principles, and secured the certainty of evil’s final defeat. Read with John 1, the cross shows that divine light triumphs not through coercion but through truth, holiness, and sacrificial love.

The Great Controversy · God the Son · The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Christ

Jesus entered the conflict between truth and deception, revealed the Father’s character, and won the decisive victory through His faithful life, atoning death, and resurrection. The great controversy continues, but its outcome is secure in Christ.

Live the Word

  1. Name the darkness that is dominating your attention without minimizing it.
  2. Read John 1:1–14 and identify what it reveals about Christ’s authority.
  3. Test one fearful or deceptive thought against Jesus’ words.
  4. Take one visible step of light: truth-telling, repentance, mercy, courage, or help-seeking.
  5. Share Christ’s hope with someone without offering shallow explanations for their pain.

Reflect on the Word

What darkness is making you lose sight of Christ’s victory?

How can you walk as a child of light today without denying the reality of suffering?

Pray the Word

Jesus, shine Your truth into my fear and confusion. Keep me honest about darkness without allowing it to become ultimate in my mind. Ground me in Your life, cross, and resurrection. Expose deception, guide my next step, and help me bear witness through truth and sacrificial love. Amen.
