The Word for Today
At the cross, evil appeared victorious. Jesus was rejected, condemned, and killed. Yet His self-giving death exposed Satan’s character and secured redemption for humanity.
The resurrection confirmed the victory. Christ broke the enemy’s claim and now ministers for believers as risen Lord and High Priest.
Spiritual conflict continues, but its final outcome is not uncertain. We resist darkness from within Christ’s accomplished victory.
Picture the Word
After a violent storm, a family stepped outside expecting to find their old orchard ruined. Branches covered the ground, the fence had fallen, and one beloved tree looked split beyond saving. Then the morning light revealed something hidden during the night: the deepest roots still held, fresh water had reached the dry soil, and living buds remained beneath the broken limbs.
The storm had done real damage, but it had not gained the final word. At Calvary, darkness also seemed to have destroyed everything. Yet the very event evil used as its weapon became the place where its defeat was exposed and life took root beyond its reach.
Deeper in the Word
Colossians joins forgiveness with Christ’s triumph. The record that stood against us was taken away, and hostile powers were publicly stripped of their claim.
The cross reveals more than physical suffering. Christ’s self-giving love answered accusation, exposed the violence of evil, and secured reconciliation for sinners.
The resurrection confirms that death could not hold Him. His heavenly ministry means believers now approach God through a living High Priest whose victory is complete.

In The Desire of Ages, chapter 79, “It Is Finished,” Ellen G. White presents the cross as decisive in the great controversy because Satan’s character was unmasked and God’s love was demonstrated. Read with Colossians 2, Calvary is apparent defeat transformed into public victory.

Pray the Word
Risen Jesus, keep me grounded in Your victory when darkness appears strong. Silence accusation with Your forgiveness, strengthen me to resist evil through truth and love, and keep my hope fixed on Your finished work and living ministry. Amen.
