Key Text
“And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee.”
Deuteronomy 31:8, KJV
The Word for Today
Israel faced a future filled with change, responsibility, conflict, and uncertainty. Moses would not cross the Jordan with them, and Joshua was being called to lead where his mentor could not go.
Moses directed Joshua’s attention away from human certainty and toward God’s presence. The Lord would go before him and remain with him. Joshua would enter unfamiliar territory, but never territory unfamiliar to God.
God’s presence did not remove the need for preparation, obedience, courage, or wise leadership. It meant those responsibilities could be faced without the false belief that everything depended on Joshua alone.
We rarely know exactly what lies ahead. We can still prepare wisely, follow Scripture, seek counsel, and trust that no future moment will surprise God.
Picture the Word
Imagine a winding path crossing a dark ridge into radiant morning light. From the traveler’s position, the far side cannot yet be seen. The road disappears over the crest, but the light already touching it suggests the future is not empty.
Faith does not require pretending the ridge is easy. It means moving toward it with the confidence that God’s presence is not limited to the ground already traveled.
Deeper in the Word
Deuteronomy 31 repeats the call to courage because fear was understandable. Israel faced fortified cities, military opposition, leadership transition, and the memory of earlier failure. Courage was not a personality trait; it was a response to God’s promise.
Joshua 1 joins God’s presence with meditation on Scripture and careful obedience. Trusting God to go before us never means ignoring what He has already made clear in His Word.
Psalm 139 expands the promise beyond geography. No height, depth, darkness, or distance removes a person from God’s knowledge and reach. His presence arrives before our awareness of it.
Jesus closes the Great Commission with a similar assurance: “I am with you alway.” Christian mission and daily faithfulness rest on the continuing presence of the risen Christ.
The Word and the Spirit of Prophecy
In Patriarchs and Prophets, chapter 43, “The Death of Moses,” Ellen G. White describes the leadership transition from Moses to Joshua and the divine faithfulness that outlasts any human leader. Read with Deuteronomy 31, the lesson is clear: servants change, circumstances shift, but God remains present and His purpose continues.

God the Father · Growing in Christ
The Father’s faithful presence gives courage for changing circumstances and new responsibilities. Growing in Christ means learning to combine trust with preparation, Scripture, wise counsel, and obedient action.
Live the Word
- Name the future situation you are imagining yourself facing alone.
- Separate what is uncertain from what God has already promised or commanded.
- Make one wise preparation without trying to control every outcome.
- Seek counsel from someone trustworthy and spiritually mature.
- Take the next obedient step while consciously trusting God’s presence.
Reflect on the Word
Which future situation feels frightening because you are imagining yourself facing it alone?
What preparation belongs to you, and what outcome must be entrusted to God?
Pray the Word
Lord, go before me and remain beside me. Keep me from treating uncertainty as abandonment or preparation as self-reliance. Give me courage to obey Scripture, receive wise counsel, and take the next responsible step. When the road disappears beyond the ridge, anchor me in Your unchanging presence. Amen.
