The Word for Today
God invites sincere hearts to come near. In James 4, drawing near is more than seeking a comforting religious feeling. It includes humility, repentance, cleansing, and a willingness to stop making peace with what pulls the heart away from God.
This movement does not earn His love. God took the first and greatest step through Jesus, who entered our world, carried our sins, and opened the way to the Father. We draw near because grace has already come near to us.
Sometimes the distance we feel is emotional rather than relational. A tired or grieving person may belong to Christ while feeling little comfort. At other times, cherished sin or neglected obedience has dulled spiritual awareness. Wisdom asks us to distinguish between these experiences rather than treating every dry season as proof of rejection.
You do not need to repair your entire life before approaching God. Begin with one honest step: open Scripture, confess what is wrong, pray without pretense, return to Christian fellowship, or obey something God has already made clear.
Picture the Word
Imagine standing at the beginning of a forest path before sunrise. You cannot see the entire route. Light touches only the next bend, and every distant detail remains hidden. Waiting for the whole path to become visible would keep you standing still.
Faith often moves within that limited light. God may not reveal every future answer, but He gives enough truth for the next faithful step. The path becomes clearer as we walk with Him, not because obedience controls God, but because relationship grows through trust.
Deeper in the Word
The prodigal son’s return began before the embrace, when he came to himself and turned toward home. Yet the father’s running welcome revealed that mercy had been waiting for him. Repentance and grace are not rivals. Repentance turns from the far country; grace receives the returning child.
Hebrews 10 says believers draw near through the new and living way opened by Christ. Our confidence is not confidence in our record, emotion, or spiritual eloquence. It rests in Jesus. The same Savior who exposes divided loyalty also supplies cleansing and access.
Drawing near to God also changes how we draw near to people. Isolation can nourish temptation and shame. God often meets us through Scripture, prayer, worship, wise counsel, and the steady presence of His church. A step toward Him may include asking a trustworthy believer for help.
The Word and the Spirit of Prophecy
In Steps to Christ, chapter 5, “Consecration,” Ellen G. White explains that surrender involves yielding the will to God rather than waiting for a particular intensity of feeling. We cannot change our own hearts, but we can choose to place the will on Christ’s side. Read with James 4, this frames drawing near as an active response to grace: not self-salvation, but a real decision to stop resisting the One who calls us home.

Pray the Word
Lord, You came near to me through Jesus before I knew how to seek You. I choose to turn toward You now. Cleanse what is divided, strengthen my will to obey, and keep me from confusing changing feelings with Your faithful love. Show me the next step and give me grace to take it. Amen.
