The Word for Today
In the wilderness, Jesus answered temptation with Scripture understood and applied faithfully. Satan also quoted Scripture, but he twisted its purpose.
Knowing isolated verses is not enough. We need to understand the Bible’s larger message and read every passage in harmony with God’s character revealed through Jesus.
When a lie attacks, identify it clearly and answer with truth in context.
Picture the Word
A woman received a message containing one sentence from a close friend: “I cannot support what you are doing.” Hurt and embarrassed, she reread it until the words became proof that she had been rejected. Hours later, she opened the full message. The next sentence said, “But I will support you while you find a healthier way forward.” The quoted line was genuine, yet separated from what surrounded it, it had taught her a lie about the writer’s heart.
Scripture can be mishandled in the same way. A verse may be quoted accurately while its context, purpose, and the character of its Author are ignored. Truth is not merely repeating the right words; it is hearing those words as God intended them to be heard.
Deeper in the Word
Jesus’ first answer comes from Deuteronomy 8, where Israel learned dependence on God in the wilderness. He did not use a detached slogan; He applied the passage within its covenant setting.
The tempter later quoted Psalm 91 while urging Jesus to test God. A biblical quotation can still deceive when removed from context or used against the character and purposes of God.
Scripture equips believers when it is read carefully, interpreted in harmony with the whole Bible, and practiced through faith in Christ.

In The Desire of Ages, chapter 12, “The Temptation,” Ellen G. White emphasizes Christ’s repeated answer, “It is written.” Read with Matthew 4, His example calls us beyond collecting verses toward trusting and obeying the God whose Word they reveal.

- Practice the truth through one concrete act of obedience.
